Please don't be fooled when choosing a breeder!! Here are a few RED flags and a few things to look for when selecting a GOOD reputable breeder: Possible RED flags Breeding pet store rats is a major red flag.. as a breeder/fancier we are trying so hard to better the rat and pet stores are all about quantity not quality... no matter how pretty or amazing a pet store rat is it is not a good practice breeding them.. Only offering pictures of rats and having no physical records. Only having one or two generations of rats in there care.. depending on how long they have been breeding. Not knowing colors or genetics of their rats. Breeding males younger than one year if they don't have living proof of that line continuously living a long healthy life Breeding females younger than 6 months Having a HUGE selection of colors and breeding all at once(a good breeder will be working on one type we call them lines, two at the most anymore than that they are not truly improving the health or anything of any rats) A good breeder MOST of the time not always will NOT allow you to come into their home and see the rats, rats get sick too easy and this is UNSAFE practice. Unless they are a new rattery or just starting their is NO reason for them to have a BUNCH of new babies from other breeders or people. A good breeder to take the time to produce rats from the stock they already have. A good long time breeder will have many many other breeders they work with, as well as contacts for people that have bought their rats, a good breeder always asked a new owner to keep in contact either by picture updates yearly by phone or email.. and we ask you to tell us if any health issues arise and when the animal dies, it sounds morbid but its necessary to know for info on our lines.. WE also ask you to fill out a sales contract stating the care you will provide for your new pet as well as if you can not keep the animal we have 1st right to buy them back.. Those are just a few things to watch for.. Just because they have a website and pictures does not make them a GOOD breeder with GOOD morals for both the rats and the customer.
